BEATIFICATION

Virtual

This group, members and friends of the Boston Fraternity, "virtually" celebrated the Beatification of Brother Charles on May 15, 2005. That date initially had been set for the raising of eleven "Servants of God" including Charles, when Pope John Paul II signed their decrees of Beatification in December. But with the passing of the Holy Father, dates for the ceremonies were postponed.

Since our travel arrangements couldn't be changed, we went to Rome anyway and participated in the Beatifications of two other candidates.

One was a German-born American nun,   Mother Marianne Cope, from Syracuse, New York. She worked with Father Damien for the lepers of Molokai. The second was a nun,    Ascension Nicol Goni, who founded an Order in Peru.

(Of course, we were looking forward to   Brother Charles' turn!)

Cardinal Sodano presided at the Beatification ceremony for the two nuns. It took place in St. Peter's Basilica on Pentecost Sunday, May 15, 2005.

Our five priests participated in the Procession. In foreground, Fr. Peter Clarke, Fr. Lennie Tighe, and Fr. Jim O'Donnell. In lefthand line the tall man is Fr. Jim deVore; second priest behind him, his brother Fr. Gerry deVore.

On another occasion, our chaplain, Fr. Lennie Tighe, concelebrated mass in a chapel of the crypt of St. Peter's Basilica, close to the tomb of Peter. A Little Sister of Jesus read the Prayer of Abandonment in its original French.

Nearby was the final resting place of the Holy Father, John Paul II. A few of us managed to glimpse it, and Dorothy got close enough for a photo. That part of St. Peter's Basilica was the most crowded place in Rome.

Another day, Father Lennie took us to . . .
