2) Biographies

1921     Bazin, René Charles de Foucauld: Hermit and Explorer. Translated by Peter Keelan. Benziger Brothers, New York.     While a novice at the Trappist Monastery of Notre-Dame, Staoueli, Algeria, Bazin first became acquainted with Charles when the latter stayed a month to consult with the Prior, Dom Louis Gonzaga. Much later, Bazin became Bishop of French Sudan and Sahara. The biography quotes substantially from Charles' writings.

1949     Fremantle, Anne Desert Calling Henry Holt and Company, New York. Old, but still one of the most readable biographies.

1955     Voillaume, René  Seeds of the Desert: the Legacy of Charles de Foucauld. (Au Coeur des Masses:La Vie Religieuse de Pere de Foucauld) Translated by Willard Hill. Burns & Oates, London. Quotes Charles' writings substantially.

Includes a chapter on the lives and interactions of Charles de Foucauld and the French Islamic scholar, Louis Massignon.

Gude, Mary Louise   Louis Massignon: The Crucible of Compassion University of Notre Dame Press 1996.  Good recent biography of Charles' friend who was instrumental in the founding of the lay fraternities.
