He crafted the altar furnishings -- tabernacle and candle holders -- from the wooden crates and tins in which his supplies were shipped. Mercurochrome, an antisceptic from his medical box, was used to paint the Heart.
From the same materials he made some of the other things for his chapel and living quarters: crosses, a clock case, rough sandals...
  Brother Charles' robe, or gandourah. The first one was given to him by the Trappists in the monastery at Staoueli, Algeria where he once had stayed. He added his adopted insignia. |
